Yesterday we heard the tragic news that our friend, Jovan Coleman aka J-1, passed away after an accident in Sweden.
J was a wonderfully positive and loving human being, a talented producer and an incredible drummer. He was so supportive of what we do, for which we will always be thankful, as well as being thankful that he graced our lives. We just wish we were able to spend more time in his company.
Our thoughts and love go out to Dam-Funk, Computer Jay (with whom J drummed with in Master Blazter) and, of course, his family and friends.
Time for the third installment of our little mix series and this one comes courtesy of Hoya favourite, Ikonika.
Ikonika is one of the best in the game, carving out her own unique sound from the early release of ‘Please’ through to her last release, ‘Fleas’ on our own label; she’s played Hoya three times, release on HOYA003 so it only seemed right to do the third podcast.
Twenty odd minutes of goodness from Mosca, Wiley, Kuedo as well as music from her Hum + Buzz label, run with Optimum, get the free download and stream below.
As everyone probably knows, Lone and Illum Sphere were invited by Radiohead to play at their launch party for TKOL 1234567 remix album. It was a historic night, and having two Hoya boys there is kinda, well, crazy.
Anyway, Lone’s set has now been uploaded, so head over to the Boiler Room by clicking HERE.
Krystal Klear has just returned to these shores after two months in the US. Whilst he was there he played shows from East to West at probably your favourite spots. If you missed him, then check the links below. If you caught him, then check them still, and pine until he hits your shores again.
Our boys Lone and Illum Sphere have been invited to play at the launch of Radiohead TKOL RMX album, on Tuesday 11th October. It’ll be streamed live on The Boiler Room and also features Caribou, Jamie XX and Thom Yorke himself.
So after the boys from Swing Ting kicked off our podcast series, we return with one of the founding members. Jonny Dub is widely known across our city and is now starting to get known outside it for all the right reasons. GLK rates him, as does Daedelus, as do the thousands of kids who seem him week in week out at local spot Hit&Run, his other residency. He’s shared stages with everyone from Doom to Magnetic Man and rocked parties from North West of England to the South East of Europe. Get to know.
Spread the word, download for free, tell your friends to download it for free and keep an eye and an ear out for the third installment in a few weeks.
It’s been a long time coming, but finally we launch our podcast. Every few weeks there will be a new mix posted by either one of our residents, friends who have played, or people who are about to play Hoya.
So the duty of kicking this whole thing off goes to two trusted and heavyweight selector friends of ours. They go by the names Platt and Samrai, who run the Manchester party Swing Ting, as well as teaming up on production under the same name. That Mosca remix? Yeah, that’s them. They’ve both played Hoya, and most of our crew have guested at their party, which is one of the finest in this city.
It’s rare that the first of anything at Hoya goes to non-residents, but we believe in these two so much that it just seemed a no brainer. Stream, download and tracklist below. Oh, and whilst you’re listening, go and like them over on that site by clicking HERE and share the mix link too… let the games begin.
Bleep are releasing a number of tunes from artists playing at this year’s Sonar. They are all free, but the catch is that the link is only up for 24 hours. So be quick, tell a friend, and go grab Illum’s new joint “KO-OTZ (One For Kutmah)” now…
So, we’re pretty pleased that everyone has been into the first two Hoya:Hoya releases, featuring out residents on 001 (Illum Sphere, Lone & Krystal Klear), then some close homies on 002 (Eliphino, Lorn & Ras G).
For 003, it’s a strictly UK ting, featuring three more tracks on limited 12” vinyl and download. Release date to follow, but for now, here’s the line-up:
Worldwide artists contribute to Nihon Kizuna music compilation in aid of Japan disaster relief effort
Over 40 international artists have donated music for the Nihon Kizuna compilation in aid of the Japan disaster relief effort. Nihon Kizuna, or 日本絆 in Japanese roughly translates as ‘bond of friendship with Japan’.
Following the earthquake and tsunami which devastated the northern coast and prefectures of Japan on Friday March 11th 2011, a small group of Tokyo-based artists (from Japan, Ukraine and France) and one visiting London-based journalist (from Italy) decided to pull their efforts and contacts together to do the only thing they could to help the country and its people – sell music to raise awareness of the devastation that hit the area and raise money for its people and the relief effort.
The motivation behind Nihon Kizuna was simple: in face of the feeling of helplessness many felt here in Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami this compilation seemed like the best way to express our support and love for the country and its people. Amid widespread scaremongering and panic from the foreign media it felt only right to stand tall alongside the people of Japan who have always welcomed foreign artists and musicians with open arms and hearts.
The compilation was put together in five days thanks to the internet. Every artist and/or label on the compilation donated a track, either previously released, unreleased or created especially for the occasion. Many of the tracks, artists and labels on the compilation have a direct relation to Japan, further highlighting the connection many people outside of the country feel towards Japan in the current situation. It’s no small thing to say that many of those involved feel a kinship to the country regardless of whether or not they’ve ever lived in or visited the country.
Nihon Kizuna is released on Friday March 18th using Bandcamp as a selling platform and with payments handled via Paypal. This will be followed by a release on iTunes Japan in the week of March 21st – as many Japanese residents do not use Paypal.
The compilation will cost £10, $15, 1,500Y or 12E and there will be the possibility to donate more should people want to via Bandcamp. The compilation will be available on iTunes Japan until the end of March, while the Bandcamp page and this website will stay up for the foreseeable future.
All proceeds from the compilation will be given to the Japan Red Cross directly.
Artists and labels involved in the compilation include Kode 9, Kuedo, Rudi Zygadlo, Broken Haze, Circulations Records, All City Records, Daisuke Tanabe, Yosi Horikawa, XLII, Memory 9, Ninja Tune, Kid Kanevil, Om Unit, Paul White, One Handed Music, BD1982, Fink, Emika, Mux Mool, Ernest Gonzales, Paper Tiger, Sesped, Jay Scarlett, Elliott Yorke (Royalty), Kan Sano, Onra and many more.
Represented on the compilation are over 7 countries, 40 artists and 10 labels.
This news is for immediate release. We ask that you please help us spread the word about this as far as possible to encourage people to give their money for a good cause. With over 40 tracks not only does this compilation constitute value for money it will also help with the relief and reconstruction effort in Northern Japan.

Long time Hoya family member Agent J has skills behind a mic and has long been building up an enviable list of artists that he has had the pleasure to interview. Check the link to be taken to his most recent Groovement show podcast featuring music from Apollo Brown, Jacques Green, Jeremiah Jae, Mathew david plus loads more. The podcast also features some tasty interviews with Daedelus and Tokimonsta during an early evening Nando’s dinner.
